Mosquito and Tick Control in Scarborough

We treat yards and properties for mosquitoes and ticks across Scarborough, carried out by our service partner Insectica Pest Control, whose base is right here in the east end. The work is an exterior perimeter and barrier treatment on the shaded, leafy places where both pests wait, plus source reduction for the standing water where mosquitoes breed. One treatment knocks a yard's population down for a few weeks, so it is run best as a seasonal program through the warm months. If mosquitoes are chasing you off your own deck in Guildwood or Woburn, or you back onto the Rouge and worry about ticks on the kids and the dog, this is the service that makes the yard usable again.

What we do

Mosquito and tick control is an outdoor, targeted job, not a fog over the whole lawn. Insectica's licensed technicians treat the specific zones where the two pests spend their time.

  • Perimeter and barrier treatment. Mosquitoes and ticks do not sit out in the open sun. They rest on the underside of leaves, in shrubs, along fence lines, under decks, and in the shaded, humid edges of a property. We apply a PMRA-registered product to those resting surfaces so the pests pick it up where they wait.
  • Source reduction and larvicide for mosquitoes. Mosquitoes breed in standing water, and spraying the adults means little if the nursery is left running. We find and empty or treat the water: clogged gutters, planter saucers, tarps, birdbaths, and the low spots in a Scarborough backyard that hold rain for a week. Where water cannot be drained, a larvicide applied to label stops the larvae before they hatch.
  • Tick-zone treatment. Ticks sit low, in tall grass, leaf litter, and the wood-edge and fence-line band where your lawn meets the ravine, the woods, or a neighbour's overgrowth. We treat those bands rather than the open turf, because that is where ticks are and where they climb onto a passing leg.

Every product is registered by Health Canada's Pest Management Regulatory Agency and applied to the label by a licensed Insectica technician. A single treatment protects a yard for a few weeks, which is why the sensible way to buy this is as a seasonal program of repeat visits through the warm season, not a one-off.

Mosquitoes in Scarborough

Mosquito season in Scarborough runs roughly May to September, tracking the warm, wet weather. They breed fast in any standing water, so the source is almost always in your own yard or the one next door: a clogged eavestrough, a birdbath nobody tips out, a pool cover holding rain, or a low spot in the lawn that puddles for days after a storm. Scarborough's deep postwar-bungalow lots and the humid, shaded backyards near the lake and the ravines are exactly the microclimate mosquitoes like, and warm nights bring them onto the deck right when you want to be out there.

There is also a public-health side, and we will be straight about it without overselling. Scarborough is part of the City of Toronto, so Toronto Public Health is the authority here. Toronto Public Health monitors mosquitoes for West Nile virus each summer, sets traps, and posts its findings, which is reason enough to keep breeding sites down around the home. We are not doctors and we do not diagnose. For health questions, or if you feel unwell after bites, that is a conversation for your doctor and for Toronto Public Health. What we do is cut how many mosquitoes are breeding on your property.

Ticks in Scarborough

Ticks are the newer worry for Scarborough yards, and it is a fair one. Blacklegged ticks, also called deer ticks, have been spreading through southern Ontario, found along ravine and wood edges, in tall grass, and in leaf litter. Scarborough has more of that habitat than most of the city: the Rouge Valley and Rouge National Urban Park on the east side, the Bluffs and their wooded slopes along the lake, and the Highland Creek ravine through the middle. If your yard in West Hill, Malvern, or Guildwood backs onto any of that green, or simply has a wild, brushy edge, that is prime tick habitat. Pets are the other way ticks arrive, carried in from a walk through long grass in the park.

Blacklegged ticks are the ones that can carry the bacteria behind Lyme disease, which is why Public Health Ontario and Toronto Public Health track them and map where they are established. We want to be careful here: we treat your yard to lower the number of ticks in it, and that is all we are claiming. We do not diagnose, and a tick bite followed by a rash, fever, or feeling unwell is a matter for a doctor, quickly. Yard treatment reduces tick pressure where you live and play, but it does not replace personal protection, and we would rather you do both. Use an approved repellent, cover up in brushy areas, and check yourself, the kids, and the dog for ticks after time outdoors.

The honest bit

Here is the part some companies skip. A mosquito or tick treatment reduces the pressure in your yard for a few weeks per application. It does not eliminate them and it does not last the whole season from one visit. Mosquitoes fly in from beyond your fence and ticks ride in on animals out of the Rouge and the Bluffs, so the population rebuilds, which is why the treatment is repeated through the warm months. And none of it replaces the basics: emptying standing water, keeping brushy edges cut back, using repellent, and doing tick checks. If someone tells you a single spray will end mosquitoes or ticks for the summer, they are selling you something.

How it works, and booking

  1. Free inspection. An Insectica technician walks the property, finds the breeding water and the resting and tick zones, and sizes the job. No charge for the look.
  2. Quote before any work. You get the price up front, in writing, before anything is treated. The cost page explains how pest jobs are priced.
  3. Treatment, often same day. Where the schedule allows, the first treatment can happen on the same visit.
  4. Seasonal program, if you want it. Because one treatment lasts weeks and not months, most yards do best on a program of repeat visits through the warm season, and booked that way the per-visit cost comes in lower than one-off calls.

Wasps are the other summer pest that turns a backyard against you; if that is the real problem, see wasp nest removal. For patios, restaurant terraces, and other properties where mosquitoes drive customers indoors, our commercial pest control covers the same treatment at that scale.

Common questions

Does yard mosquito spraying actually work?

Yes, within honest limits. A barrier treatment on the shaded resting spots, combined with removing or treating the standing water they breed in, meaningfully cuts how many mosquitoes are in your yard for a few weeks per application. It does not stop every mosquito that flies in from beyond your fence, which is why it is repeated through the season rather than done once.

How long does one treatment last?

A few weeks per application, not the whole season. The product breaks down over time and new mosquitoes and ticks arrive from outside the property, so the population rebuilds. That is why the service is run as a seasonal program of repeat visits rather than a single spray.

Is the treatment safe for kids, pets, and pollinators?

The products are registered by Health Canada's PMRA and applied to the label by a licensed Insectica technician, and the technician will tell you how long to keep people and pets off the treated area. We treat the shaded resting and edge zones where mosquitoes and ticks sit, not flowering plants where bees forage, which keeps the product away from pollinators. If you keep bees or have flowering beds, tell us and we will plan around them.

How do you control ticks in a Scarborough yard?

By treating the specific zones where ticks live: tall grass, leaf litter, and the wood-edge and fence-line band where your lawn meets brush, woods, or a ravine like the Rouge or Highland Creek. We treat those transition areas rather than the open lawn, because that is where ticks wait to climb onto a passing person or pet. Keeping grass cut and that edge cleared back makes the treatment work better.

Do I still need repellent and tick checks if you treat the yard?

Yes. Yard treatment lowers the number of mosquitoes and ticks where you live and play, but it does not replace personal protection. Use an approved repellent, cover up in brushy areas, and check yourself, the kids, and the dog for ticks after being outside, especially after time near the Bluffs or the Rouge. We treat the yard and you cover the person; the two work together.

When should I start mosquito and tick treatments in Scarborough?

Early in the season, around when the weather warms in spring, so you knock the first generation down before it builds. Mosquito activity runs roughly May to September here, and ticks are active whenever it is above freezing and the ground is not snow-covered, so starting early and repeating through the warm months gives the best control.
